Rajneeti 2.0
Posted by Ritesh - 14/01/09 at 12:01:42 pmI was surprised to see the website of BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Shri L K Advani. Seems like President Obama’s use of internet during his campaign has inspired many to establish their presence on the net. The internet has become synonymous with the younger generation and this new form of campaigning is an effort to find in roads to enticing the youth to vote. Other efforts like Jaagore have also been designed especially to encourage the otherwise uninterested youth to vote. Jaagore almost reminds me of P Diddy’s vote or die campaign. Looking back at some of our politicians and the diligence with which they handled issues like terror , allegations and instances when they made news, I am but over enthusiastic about the legislative future of my country. With such inspiring prospects being added to cadre, not to forget the seriousness with which they treat this post, its almost certain that our country is headed to being utopian at the least.
Whats my take on this ? I am not very clear. I am in a fix to decide which leader to vote for. I am trembling on my stands of libertarianism when faced with such convincing candidates. Let the big choice not be so hard on us folks. If capable leaders is what we need then we have dozens of them. Why make us choose ?

A wise man once told me – Subtlety and Sarcasm are but a traits of few . Anyhoo, I would like to get your reactions on the topic. Forget that you almost figured out mine.

After Independence, its been our mantra to not miss the bus on any new technology and adapt to it as quickly as possible….the Internet approach is the new thing, so can we stay behind….Politics is still the same….but if some people get something good done…I’m ready to overlook the rest of money making practices

I think optimism is what keeps our political machinery running. Every 5 years( or is it two now) people become optimistic about a certain set of people or a party and then wholeheartedly vote in favour of them and are later let down. I dont have the numbers on the voters in each category but I am sure that in the educated class and the upper (and upper middle) class, the numbers will be very disheartening. Is democracy characterized by periodic optimism ? Or is it mankind in general ? Ok, now I am confused.

Ritesh,
At the outset, let me tell you that my comment earlier was only intended to probe the reason for your writing this post.I still am trying to figure out if all you wanted was to find out our reactions on this topic as you say.(ANY sensitive topic is guaranteed to evoke responses-like one of your earleir posts on God and stuff).
Having said that, i feel that the voting awareness campaings succeed in just that:creating awareness. But what if i do not want to vote for any of the contestants for the simple reason that i feel none of them is competent to bring about the change(a very relative term depending on what change means to you, say no reservation policies vs more reservation policies)that i want to see? I feel that for a sensible democracy to prevail, the citizens’ representative should have a good sense of,if not a formal education in,economics and social sciences- not some film star or rock punk. And lets’ face it;such a leader in the Indian context is a very unlikey, with all the ‘good ones’ pursuing other career paths, by choice or otherwise.(I have a good friend who loves journalism and is pretty good at economics, but is right now a ‘bussiness analyst’ for an IT firm).Guess that leaves only the B(/H/K)ollywood stars to save the day!
I hope the awareness campaingns do not land me in Stan’s situation where i am forced to choose between the douche and sandwhich though i like neither. As for Advani and the internet, you know what to make of that, esp. after the ESIT lectures

@Ravi : the notion of cleaning up politics is almost a dream in our country. Most guys who are qualified in the fields that you mentioned are in the bureaucracy and are doing good work. I think as long as that layer stays clean, we will see a prosperous nation. If reservation and red tapism infiltrate that layer, then we will be governed by a bunch of monkeys. Thankfully IAS exams do a good job of filtering people for the bureaucracy.
