The doodh doodh ad made me write this piece. Amul aka Anand Milk Union Limited, a co-operative which boasts of more than 2 million milk producers under its wing, is probably the biggest organization of its kind. Amul’s products have been iconic even since its inception. Amul’s brand name is every marketers dream, replacing the primary commodity (butter ) in some cases. People don’t ask for butter they ask for amul butter.

Amuls doodle’s on the back of their cover’s is also one of the most symbolic contributions to the culture of the times. Most of their covers depict a current event and a subtle but buttery take on it. Here’s one of the earliest ones, followed by one of the latest ones

Doodle on compulsory sterilisation introduced during Indira Gandhi regime.

Anyway, Amul’s brand name is near legend and its worth treasuring these pieces of cultural heritage. Things which I grew up(big) on. Here is one of the earliest ads followed by one that was aired sometime in the 90’s.

Another classic advertisement on DD from the co-operative milk society. Even after all these years, I still remember the lyrics. Very catchy and a great campaign.

Classic advertisements of Gold Spot. Hmm, I smell something GREASy, do you??

,

Hmm… self explanatory

A series of Bajaj ads starting from the oldest to the newest. Please contribute new ads that I might have missed.

Little newer I guess. But definitely pre pulsar era

The new ad with heavy guitar riffs and rock vocals.

,

Haha, this is funny. I wonder how they came up with the name DigJam, sounds really ghetto. Anyway, one of India’s most acclaimed director, Shekar Kapoor doing is full length ad. I also the love the typewriter in the shot.

,

Liril is known for their steamy ads on television. This is apparently the first liril girl. Again, I dont remember seeing this on television but its fascinating seeing all these ads.

Update: Slightly better quality video.

,

Can’t believe this ad was made in the 80’s. The theme song has still not changed. Same as the liril ad.

,

A famous commercial for Rasna. Rasna girls were almost a legend during those days. Anyway, this ad features Ankita, who has grown quite a lot since the ad.

This is Ankita in her current form:

Ankita all grown up
