The doodh doodh ad made me write this piece. Amul aka Anand Milk Union Limited, a co-operative which boasts of more than 2 million milk producers under its wing, is probably the biggest organization of its kind. Amul’s products have been iconic even since its inception. Amul’s brand name is every marketers dream, replacing the primary commodity (butter ) in some cases. People don’t ask for butter they ask for amul butter.

Amuls doodle’s on the back of their cover’s is also one of the most symbolic contributions to the culture of the times. Most of their covers depict a current event and a subtle but buttery take on it. Here’s one of the earliest ones, followed by one of the latest ones

Amul butters latest doodle

Anyway, Amul’s brand name is near legend and its worth treasuring these pieces of cultural heritage. Things which I grew up(big) on. Here is one of the earliest ads followed by one that was aired sometime in the 90’s.

Another classic advertisement on DD from the co-operative milk society. Even after all these years, I still remember the lyrics. Very catchy and a great campaign.

I didn’t know Alif Laila, one of the famous shows that aired on sunday mornings, had Ramanand Sagar doing the screenplay. The Sagar family is famous for Hindu mythological serials, much like the Ramsay’s for horror. Anyway, here is the theme from Alif Laila.

One of the greatest comedy serials on DD by Jaspal Bhatti. Watch the intro to flop show. Also looking for the ending credits where every role was added a negative prefix (ex : misdirection by ….)

Ok, this was one of my favorites again on DD again. All the sportstars of that generation are in the video. PT Usha, Srikanth, Milkha Singh, Gavaskar, Prakash Padukone to name a few. Further below is the original from the classic 1981 film Chariots of Fire Seems the likes of Anu Malik and Pritham have their roots from the national broadcast network. Enjoy!!

This was the advertisement for one of the most annoying clocks every built on Indian soil. The clock would play a song every hour and would wake the entire household during the nights. A later mod of the clock allowed for setting of AM/PM so as to stop the clock from screaming at night.
