on Jan 10th, 2007Offline Web Applications – Dojo Offline toolkit

Online applications are improving leaps and bounds, in their attempt to replicate desktop applications, web apps have created near perfect online substitutes for desktop apps. Take for example meebo, Yahoo Mail Beta (similar to outlook) and Google Spreadsheets. The biggest impairment is the online connection that is required for these applications. Take this example where while updating a critical spreadsheet you lose connectivity, the application stops responding as there is no ajax write back, the reult, a dead application.

Well there is relief in this sphere and there are many applications that let you work on web apps even if there is network disturbance or disconnection. First there was Zoho that let you work on their office suite even if you are online, meebo, which informed you about network disruption and got back, I don’t know if the messages go through.

Dojo, one of my favorite toolkits will be working for the next three months to deliver a prelimnary version of the offline toolkit, that lets browsers cache content and let you work offline and then synchronise with the server later. I think it will use the dojo storage engine , which comprises of saving data on swf file. Its a great step ahead for web technologies, handing over such technologies to developers all around the world to let them innovate. I still say 2007 is the year for Web 2.0.
