on Nov 23rd, 2006Popup 2.0 popups revisited

Almost anybod,y who surfed the right kinda sites :-) during the web1.0 era in 99-00, will rememebr the popup nightmares.  Those times when opening one site will trigger opening of another window, and that another and so on. And remember those pop up blocker utilities that were sold for ridiculous prices, to combat this popup menace. Well it seems there is a new kind of menace now, not quite resource hungry as the pop up but definetely as irritating.

The new age of javascript brings the new floating pane window, or the floating window. This is a new kind of pop up, where in you can place ads and surface them at the right time is proving quite a menace. Almost all upload /download sites have already begun using this new widget to its full revenue generating capabilites. Popups brought about new standards in browsers ( mandatory Title bar), think its high time people started thinking about standards for these. Though these widgets are enclosedinside one single browser window, yet they can be modal and can prove very fatal for browsers.

The best approach would be to enforce these restrictions in the framework level and rate these vendors on these standards. But there will always be people who will rework some amount of code and make it evil again. The problem is far fetched and the solution further, lets hope this menace ends soon.
