Ok, let me see if I get this right, google is not a company that does not think revenue when it comes out with a product, and rightly so. But people are puzzled by google’s generosity in providing gmail, calendar etc. Yeah, there are ads on gmail , but definitely google is not in to cash in on those ads. So whats the big picture is what everybody is asking. Let me give you my take on it.

Well its one of the best worked out strategies i have ever seen. Honestly, I think the team of strategists have nailed it on this one, Google. please do remember to give the visionary department a pat in the back or a bonus of some sort.

Its obvious, Google apps for enterprises. The first of the lot was definetely Gmail, followed by calendar, spreadsheets, writely, docs, chat, page creator. Gmail was first advertised for its sheer excellence in email, then came the collaboration suite of all the above mentioned apps. The result was a clear cut winner against MS office. Google plans to release a mother suite of applications that are web based and will replace MS office. I mean they have all the ingredients right. The first example of this would be Google Apps for your Domain, which will let you customise the UI and the services.

So, now you will have your company email, calendar, documents etc on Google Apps rather than MS office. Your email box will basically be GMail but customised for your company needs. Great huh? think about it . The existing users and popularity of their application suite is proof enough for their quality. See revenue now? Software as a Service model?

Get it now ? :-)

I think there are multiple prongs to their strategy which provide potential growth opportunities and some revenue safety should advertising falter as driver for the business.

Google Apps is interesting but could be an enterprise risk. Google being unavailable may be hard to imagine but if history is any indicator the unimaginable does not equal impaossible.
